The Integrity Committee in the Iraqi Parliament affirmed on Sunday its support for the government of Ali al-Zaidi’s approach to combating corruption, considering the current campaign to be a qualitative shift that affects senior officials, at a time when investigations continue in secrecy with the expansion of judicial and security measures.
Committee member Hamid Al-Fatlawi told Shafaq News Agency that “the Integrity Committee supports the government’s approach to combating corruption, and today there is a radical difference in the mechanism for combating corruption, including senior officials, and this gives a positive impression that the government is serious about this issue.”
Al-Fatlawi added that “the investigation into the case of the detained Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, is still confidential, and the procedures are still ongoing,” indicating that “there is no official announcement yet of the names of the detainees, but political officials have been arrested, and we confirm that. There are also names that appeared in the investigations that have not yet been revealed, and the investigations have been ongoing for 15 days.”
He pointed out that “corruption is widespread throughout Iraq and not just in Baghdad, and we support the campaign including all governorates, and the arrest of everyone against whom corruption charges are proven, without excluding any governor or director general in any ministry or governorate,” calling for “not yielding to any political pressures that may obstruct the course of investigations,” considering that “this campaign is the largest of its kind, and the first time it has been implemented on this scale.”
The investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court announced last Monday that investigations into the case of Al-Jumaili and the parties involved with him are continuing, confirming that the value of the seized funds has increased to 10 million US dollars and 31 billion Iraqi dinars, after seizing about 20 billion dinars that were hidden in one of the farms and thwarting the smuggling of five billion dinars in one of the governorates.
Last month, a special security force arrested the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs and Director General of the North Refineries Company and Baiji Refinery, Adnan Hamad Hamoud (Adnan Al-Jumaili), in the Ishaqi area of Salah al-Din Governorate, on charges related to corruption files, in one of the most prominent cases opened by the Iraqi authorities as part of the ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
An informed source revealed to Shafaq News Agency earlier on Sunday the details of the largest anti-corruption operation in the country, which has so far resulted in the arrest of 43 officials and politicians, and will be completed in a second phase targeting “first-class” figures.
According to the source, the operation that was launched is considered the first part, and the total number of detainees in it reached 43 people, some of whom were released.
Meanwhile, another informed source revealed to Shafaq News Agency that the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, sent a message to the Iraqi Prime Minister, Ali al-Zubaidi, in which he announced his support for the government measures aimed at pursuing and holding accountable those involved in corruption cases.
It is reported that security forces in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, began on Sunday morning to close the entrances to the fortified Green Zone (which includes the parliament building, government headquarters and diplomatic missions), coinciding with a large-scale raid and search campaign that targeted the homes of MPs, politicians and businessmen.
These unprecedented and stringent measures come in conjunction with frequent reports of an expanded list of prosecutions targeting senior officials, security personnel, and businessmen on charges of illicit enrichment and squandering of public funds.
