Nineveh: Agreement reached to complete requirements for operating Mosul Airport within 3 months

Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil announced on Wednesday that an agreement had been reached with the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority to complete the technical and administrative requirements for operating Mosul International Airport, within a timeframe not exceeding 3 months.
Al-Dakhil said in a post on his Facebook page, which was followed by Shafaq News, that a meeting was held at the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Authority, during which it was agreed that the Nineveh Governorate would take over the auditing of all plans by a specialized consultant according to the specified priorities, in addition to completing the plans related to approach and departure procedures for aircraft.
He added that the Civil Aviation Authority and Nineveh Governorate will work to select an airport operator in accordance with approved international standards, based on the directives and deliberations of the Prime Minister. He noted that the concerned parties agreed to complete these requirements within a period not exceeding three months from the date of the Prime Minister’s approval of the meeting minutes.
The governor of Nineveh concluded his remarks by saying that completing these procedures will pave the way for granting Mosul International Airport the official license by the Civil Aviation Authority in preparation for putting it into service.
On June 10, 2026, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority revealed the reasons for the delay in opening Mosul International Airport, attributing it to the failure to contract with a construction audit consultant for the project, to determine the airport operator, and other basic requirements that have not yet been completed.
Former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated Mosul International Airport on July 16, 2025, which had been rebuilt eight years after the liberation of Nineveh from ISIS.
It was hoped that the airport would be fully completed and operational two months after its opening, but it was not completed and was closed for unknown reasons.
