The US Embassy in Baghdad warned its citizens in Iraq on Tuesday of escalating security risks, noting that they face threats including kidnapping and attacks that could target Americans and their interests, and urging them to leave the country when conditions permit.

In a security alert issued today, the embassy said that Iran and its affiliated armed groups “continue to pose a serious threat to public safety,” urging American citizens to exercise caution, avoid drawing attention to themselves, and stay away from places associated with the United States or where Americans congregate.

The warning added that previous attacks had targeted American citizens and interests in Iraq, stressing that Americans face the risk of kidnapping, while American companies, hotels frequented by foreigners, and other facilities linked to the United States have been attacked in the past.

The embassy urged its citizens to leave Iraq “as soon as conditions become safe,” noting that those who choose to stay should be prepared to remain in a safe place for extended periods with access to food, water, medicine, and basic necessities.

The warning explained that Iraqi airspace remains closed and commercial flights are currently suspended, while land routes for departure are available via Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, with the possibility of long delays at border crossings.

He noted that Saudi Arabia and Turkey currently offer commercial flights that American citizens can use to leave the region, while flights from Kuwait are not currently available due to the risks of missile and drone attacks.

The embassy also urged American citizens to stay in safe places and avoid protests and demonstrations, especially in central Baghdad areas such as Tahrir Square and the July 14 Bridge, noting that these gatherings have sometimes witnessed acts of violence.

The warning also highlighted the continued threat of missiles, drones, and falling debris in Iraqi airspace, urging Americans to remain in fortified buildings as much as possible.

On March 2, the U.S. State Department ordered the departure of non-essential government personnel from Iraq due to the risk of armed conflict, and confirmed the suspension of routine consular services at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil.
