Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his optimism on Sunday regarding the federal government headed by Ali al-Zaidi, stressing his desire for joint action to achieve sustainable security and advance reconstruction efforts. While reiterating his support for the diplomatic path to end the conflict between Washington and Tehran, he emphasized that Iraq and the region will not be part of any regional conflict.
This came in a speech delivered by President Nechirvan Barzani during the graduation ceremony of a new batch of students from the “Qalajolan” military college in Sulaymaniyah, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency.
Unity of ranks and stance
In his speech, Barzani said, “Our constant message within Kurdistan is unity of position and cohesion among all political parties and components, as the strength of the region and the guarantee of its survival and gains lies in our cohesion and overcoming all political differences and conflicts,” noting that “all forces and parties in Kurdistan together represent and form a great force, and maintain the constitutional entity of the region.”
The President of the region praised the role of the international coalition led by the United States of America, expressing his gratitude for “the sincere support they provided in confronting and defeating terrorism, as well as their continued support for the reform process and the unification of the Peshmerga forces.”
Peshmerga reform and constitutional obligations
He added: “Although the current steps in the process of reforming and unifying the Peshmerga forces are good, our ambition is greater, and these steps must be accelerated and the obstacles that hinder the process must be addressed in a way that serves the supreme national interest of Iraq and Kurdistan,” stressing the determination to make this reform project a success in view of the vital tasks entrusted to the Peshmerga in protecting the constitutional entity of the region and its security and stability, which is an integral part of federal Iraq.
In the same context, Barzani called on the federal government in Baghdad to “assume its full constitutional responsibilities towards the Peshmerga forces, especially regarding the provision of weapons, ammunition and entitlements,” explaining that “the Iraqi constitution recognizes that the Peshmerga are part of the security system and protectors of stability, and that our success and destiny in Iraq are one.”
Optimism regarding the Zaidi government and regional de-escalation
He continued: “We look forward with great optimism to dealing with the Al-Zaidi government on the basis of the constitution, mutual respect, and sincere work to achieve reconstruction, progress, and prosperity throughout the country.”
On the regional level, the President of the Region welcomed the efforts to stop the escalation and resolve the disputes between Washington and Tehran through diplomatic channels, dialogue and understanding, adding: “The Region seeks to maintain stability and security in the region, and to ensure that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region do not become an arena for conflicts, but rather we always aim to be part of the solution to consolidate regional and international peace.”
