On Thursday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani expressed the region’s readiness to work with Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi in forming a government whose program is based on the fundamental principles of the constitution and ensures the well-being and prosperity of all Iraqis. At the same time, he reiterated the need for cooperation and coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army in order to confront terrorism and prevent its reappearance in the country.
This came in a speech he delivered during the graduation ceremony of the third class of 359 officers with the rank of lieutenant at the Second Military College in the administration of the independent “Zakho” region.
The Peshmerga are part of the defense system
In his speech, President Nechirvan Barzani said, “The Peshmerga forces are part of the Iraqi defense system, and this college is also part of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. Therefore, Iraq must fulfill all its constitutional obligations to the Peshmerga forces in terms of support and armament.” He emphasized that “the Peshmerga do not pose a threat to Iraq; rather, they are the protectors of the homeland. This was demonstrated in the process of liberating the country from the grip of ISIS, by protecting Baghdad, fighting the extremist organization, and breaking its myth.”
The conflict in the region
In another part of his speech, the President of the region addressed the tensions in the Middle East region, saying, “We are going through a difficult situation and these tensions have affected everyone. We in the Kurdistan Region affirm our firm position that we are for a peaceful solution to all problems and disputes, and we do not want Kurdistan and Iraq to become part of the conflict in any way.”
Iraqi political process
Regarding the formation of the next Iraqi government, President Nechirvan Barzani said, “We look forward with hope to working with Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi on the basis of the Iraqi constitution, and we are ready to work with him to guarantee the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan and to achieve prosperity, progress and development for all of Iraq without discrimination.”
He added that “the Kurdistan Region is an important part of Iraq, we are linked together, our victory is one and our challenges are shared,” stressing that “Baghdad’s strength means the Kurdistan Region’s strength and the Kurdistan Region’s strength is Baghdad’s strength,” and affirming the region’s readiness to resolve the outstanding disputes and issues between Baghdad and Erbil on the basis of the constitution.
