Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani revealed on Wednesday that there had been official contact with the Iranian side following the recent attacks, confirming that Tehran had acknowledged that “some mistake” had occurred in targeting the Peshmerga forces and expressed its regret over the incident.

This came in statements he made to journalists, which were followed by Shafaq News Agency, on the sidelines of his participation in the mourning ceremony for the six Peshmerga forces victims in the administration of the independent “Soran” region.

Barzani said: “We have been in direct contact with the Iranian side, and they have officially acknowledged that a mistake was made in directing the missile strike,” indicating that Tehran offered its condolences and promised to conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack, while the region awaits to be informed of the final results.

The region’s president reiterated his condemnation of the attack, stressing that Kurdistan’s policy is “clear and explicit” as a stabilizing factor in the region, and that Erbil has not been and will not be a source of threat or part of the escalation, especially towards neighboring Iran.

In a related context, Nechirvan Barzani urged the federal government to exercise its sovereign functions, pointing to the need to stop the attacks launched by “outlaw groups” against the region.

He stressed that protecting the security of Kurdistan is Baghdad’s constitutional responsibility and this duty should be carried out firmly.
