The National Security Service announced on Saturday that it had taken over its duties at checkpoints and border crossings in Iraq.
The agency said in its statement: “In implementation of the directives of the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces regarding strengthening control over border crossings and combating smuggling in accordance with the powers granted to him, the agency’s detachments have begun taking the necessary measures to assume the tasks assigned to them in a number of border crossings and checkpoints.”
He stressed “the importance of implementing government directives with high precision, and harnessing all intelligence, technical and field capabilities to tighten control over border crossings, and prevent smuggling operations or violations of applicable instructions, in a way that contributes to protecting the national economy and enhancing state resources.”
He continued, “The National Security Service detachments have also begun to be present inside the customs inspection and exchange areas and the locations specified within the executive plan, to monitor and detect any violations or smuggling attempts, in cooperation and coordination with the General Authority of Customs, the Border Ports Authority and the rest of the competent security agencies.”
It is noted that a security source in Nineveh Governorate reported a short while ago that the National Security Directorate has taken over the management of the external checkpoints and border crossings linking the governorate with other governorates .
The source said that “among the most prominent checkpoints that have come under the supervision of the National Security are the Martyr Subhan checkpoint towards Erbil Governorate, the Mosul Dam checkpoint for those coming from Dohuk Governorate, the Al-Barari checkpoint at the southern entrance to Nineveh Governorate, as well as the Makhmur checkpoint .”
The source explained that “work within these checkpoints is still being carried out in coordination with other security agencies, within a joint security framework aimed at regulating entry and exit and enhancing security measures,” adding that “current directives allow only construction materials to pass through these checkpoints, in accordance with the regulations and instructions issued by the Prime Minister’s office.”
