MP Haider al-Rubaie, from the State of Law Coalition, confirmed on Tuesday that the government’s resort to deducting from the salaries of employees, especially those with higher degrees, reflects a deadlock in financial solutions, noting that this measure cannot be considered a sustainable solution to the crisis.
Al-Rubaie told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “The state today is facing a complex financial situation, in the absence of a budget and with limited time, which is pushing it to look for quick solutions, including borrowing or deductions, but these are temporary solutions and do not address the root of the problem.”
He added that “continued borrowing raises serious questions: How long will it continue? And can a stable fiscal policy be built amidst internal and external debts?” He stressed that “deductions in themselves are not a suitable solution, but rather a necessary measure imposed by the current circumstances.”
Al-Rubaie pointed out that “addressing these problems depends on the formation of a new government, capable of putting the financial and economic files on the table for real solutions, in a way that is consistent with the interests of citizens and alleviates their burdens.”
He explained that “the current financial crisis may pose one of the biggest challenges facing the next government, but it is not the only crisis. Iraq faces multiple accumulated problems, from internal and external debts to service crises such as water shortages and rising prices.”
