Member of Parliament Ali al-Kinani affirmed on Saturday that the continued rampant financial and administrative corruption in state institutions represents the greatest threat to Iraq’s security and stability. He pointed out that the funds looted through corrupt deals and fictitious projects could have transformed Iraq into an attractive environment for investment.
Al-Kinani told the Information Agency that “the continued spread of financial and administrative corruption in state institutions hinders development and deprives citizens of their most basic rights to services and a decent standard of living.” He explained that “the continuation of this phenomenon directly impacts the reality of services and the economy in the country.”
He added that “the funds looted through corrupt deals and fictitious projects could have transformed Iraq into an attractive environment for investment and built infrastructure worthy of the sacrifices of its people.” He stressed “the necessity of taking serious measures to curb corruption and hold those involved accountable.”
Al-Kinani emphasized that “combating this epidemic is no longer a political option,” calling for “strengthening oversight and accountability measures and protecting public funds in a way that contributes to supporting stability and achieving development.”
According to the latest government figures, the funds recovered during Operation Dawn’s Charge amounted to 206 billion Iraqi dinars and 141 million US dollars, in addition to half a ton of gold, or 500 kilograms. These figures do not include the value of real estate, land, and factories seized and confiscated inside and outside Iraq, which is estimated at more than 534.3 million dollars. The total is expected to rise as investigations and recovery operations continue.
