MP Ali Kadhim, from the “Good News, Iraq” coalition, confirmed on Sunday that Iraq continues to suffer from a worsening electricity crisis due to the failure to address the problem over the past years. He called on the government to adopt more flexible plans to provide energy to citizens.
Kadhim told the Information Agency that “the electricity crisis has not been addressed for years, causing many problems for citizens,” stressing “the need to develop practical and rapid solutions to mitigate its repercussions.”
He added that “solar energy represents a quick and important solution to the electricity crisis,” urging “the government to work on providing it to citizens at low prices, making it easily accessible.”
Kadhim pointed out that “the electricity sector needs a long-term strategy,” emphasizing “the importance of combining immediate solutions with strategic plans to ensure a stable energy supply for citizens.”
Given this reality, the solar energy market in Iraq faces a significant paradox; Despite the global and local decrease in the price of a single solar panel to approximately 125,000 Iraqi dinars (around $80-$95 for a 550-600 watt panel), the total cost of installing a complete home solar system remains exorbitant and burdensome for the average Iraqi citizen. This cost ranges from 5 to 10 million Iraqi dinars (approximately $3,800-$7,500 USD) for medium-sized systems, making the transition to solar energy a costly option despite the drop in panel prices.
