Member of Parliament Ahmed al-Shammari confirmed on Saturday that Parliament will proceed with holding a session to elect the President of the Republic this week as an “inevitable” obligation, indicating that the constitutional procedures will not wait for Kurdish consensus if the deadlock continues.
Al-Shammari told the Information Agency, “Parliament is determined to hold a session to elect the President of the Republic within the next few days, whether the two Kurdish parties reach a final agreement or not,” noting that “paralyzing the legislative institution is no longer possible in light of the current challenges.”
He added that “the security and political situation in the region is still witnessing significant tension, which requires national forces to expedite the completion of constitutional appointments and the formation of the government to ensure the country’s stability.”
He stressed that “finalizing the presidential election is the essential gateway to moving to the stage of nominating the candidate of the largest bloc.”
Al-Shammari continued, “Everyone must bear their national responsibilities to end the political stagnation and move towards meeting the requirements of the next stage, far removed from the politics of imposing wills or the deliberate obstruction of institutions.”
