MP Muthanna al-Azzawi from the Azm Alliance - What happened in the confidence vote session was deliberate to exclude some political blocsMP Muthanna Al-Azzawi, from the Al-Azm Alliance, confirmed Thursday (May 14, 2026), that what happened during the vote on the cabinet was “planned to exclude some political blocs and prevent them from voting for their candidates.”

Al-Azzawi said in a press statement, “We congratulate Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on gaining the confidence of the House of Representatives and we affirm our support for his government,” explaining that “the representatives of the Azm Alliance voted for all the ministers, including the candidates of the Progress Party, because we were committed to passing al-Zaidi’s government.”

He added, “We register our objection to the performance of the Speaker of Parliament during the confidence vote session,” noting that “the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, insisted on passing the government despite the exclusion that Azm, the State of Law Coalition, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party were subjected to.”

Al-Azzawi continued, “The Al-Azm Alliance’s entitlement will come despite any party trying to obstruct it,” stressing that “Mr. Ali Al-Zaidi will not accept the exclusion of blocs that have parliamentary representation.”

He pointed out that “what happened during the session was deliberate in order to exclude some political blocs and prevent them from voting for their candidates by creating problems within the session.”

These statements come in the wake of the confidence vote session for the government of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Kazem al-Zaidi, which witnessed political disagreements between a number of blocs regarding some nominations and the voting mechanism, amid an exchange of accusations about the management of the session and the balance of political representation within the new cabinet.
