On Monday, MP Mohammed Jassim Al-Khafaji attributed the current gasoline crisis to what he described as “corruption and mismanagement over the years,” criticizing the Ministry of Oil’s handling of the crisis despite the continued provision and daily sale of fuel.
Al-Khafaji said in a post, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, that the daily consumption of gasoline is about 35 million liters, compared to local production of 30 million liters, which means the need to import about 5 million liters per day.
He added that the need to import gasoline, in his opinion, is due to a number of problems, including the lack of national tankers, the absence of a strategic reserve, the failure to establish modern refineries to meet local needs, as well as the lack of a policy to rationalize fuel consumption.
Al-Khafaji questioned the reasons for the continued need to import gasoline and manage the crisis in this manner, criticizing the performance of the Ministry of Oil and its media in dealing with the current supply crisis.
The gasoline crisis continues in the capital, Baghdad, and the central and southern provinces of the country, since the beginning of this week, after it witnessed a breakthrough last month, amid a fuel shortage that is affecting Iraq in general.
