Member of Parliament Riyadh al-Masoudi revealed on Friday that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi lacks a strong parliamentary bloc or popular support to implement American demands, placing him in an awkward position given the need to appease both domestic and international actors simultaneously.
Al-Masoudi told the Information Agency, “Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s current strength does not qualify him to implement American directives, as he lacks a parliamentary bloc or popular support aligned with his policies. He is facing internal and external pressures to proceed with implementing American demands, which include conditions that are impractical for well-known reasons.” He added, “Prime Minister al-Zaidi will be caught in a gray area between the demands of the domestic audience, regional powers, and the United States.” He explained that “al-Zaidi’s ability to succeed depends on achieving political balance and avoiding deviating from the political consensus. Making unilateral decisions on complex issues could weaken his position.” He emphasized that “the Iraqi perspective on dealing with the proposed American issues is completely different from that of the other side and largely incompatible.”
