An informed political source revealed on Sunday that the Iranian Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, sent a message to leaders within the coordination framework, which included positions related to the current situation and the relationship with Iraq.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that “a delegation that included the head of the Supreme Islamic Council, Humam Hamoudi, and the leader in the Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Fadak al-Muhammadawi, along with the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad and a number of Iraqi and Iranian figures, met this morning with the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki.”

He added that “the delegation delivered to Maliki a personal message from Mojtaba Khamenei, in which he expressed his gratitude to the Iraqi people for their support and assistance to Iran during the current war, stressing Tehran’s appreciation for this stance.”

The source indicated that “the message also included confirmation of Iran’s support for the Iraqis, as well as its support for the Coordination Framework’s position regarding the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for the premiership.”

He added that “similar messages of thanks and appreciation from Khamenei will also be sent to a number of Iraqi leaders, in addition to the supreme religious authority, Ali al-Sistani.”

The Coordination Framework had officially nominated Maliki on January 24, a move that opened the door to negotiations to form the new government, but the process faltered as disagreements continued over the election of the President of the Republic, the constitutional entitlement that precedes assigning the candidate of the largest bloc to form the government.

Pressure on Maliki’s nomination increased after US President Donald Trump announced on January 27 that Washington would not continue to support Iraq if Maliki returned to the premiership, while Maliki later said he would welcome a decision to replace his nomination if it came from the coalition that nominated him.

The coordinating framework, which includes ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq, is also witnessing a division over the nomination of Maliki for the next government, amid American warnings of the repercussions of his selection, which prompted forces within the coalition to try to persuade him to withdraw in order to preserve the unity of the framework.
