The Ministry of Transport announced on Saturday the most prominent indicators of work in the ports sector and related services during the first 100 days of the government’s work, while pointing to an increase in the movement of receiving ships in the Umm Qasr North Port by more than 21 percent, and the near completion of the main components of the Grand Faw Port. The Director of Media of the Ministry of Transport, Hussein Ahmed Al-Karbalai, told the official agency that “the Umm Qasr North Port recorded the reception of 80 commercial ships during the month of June 2026, compared to 66 ships during the month of May, an increase of about 21.2 percent, which indicates an increase in the movement of receiving ships and the operational activity of the port.”
He added, “The port also witnessed the arrival of a giant ship coming directly from Chinese ports and docking at berth number 18 without an intermediary, which reflects the readiness of the berths to receive ships of large sizes and support the movement of direct shipping lines.” He continued, “Berth number 19 received the ship (KSL MINGYANG) loaded with 5,209 pieces of various oil equipment intended to support Iraqi fields, while berth number 17 received the ship (KSL FUYANG) coming from the port of Shanghai, with about 1,350 pieces on board, including oil equipment and two huge electric generators, each weighing 163 tons.”
He also pointed out that “the technical staff completed the planning work for the dock floors and the waterfront and placed the signs and instructions for the movement of trucks in the northern Umm Qasr port, in addition to the rehabilitation work of the service facilities, warehouse facades and docks, with the aim of organizing the movement and raising the efficiency of work.”
Regarding the Grand Faw Port, Karbalai explained that “the project has recorded advanced completion rates in its main components, as the completion rate of the submerged tunnel reached 98 percent, the container project 97 percent, while the completion rates of the docks, the connecting road and the navigation channel reached 100 percent.”
He also noted that “the Minister of Transport conducted a field visit to the Grand Faw Port project to review the implementation phases and completion rates, while emphasizing adherence to timetables, technical and engineering standards, and accelerating the completion of the remaining work,” indicating that “the project represents one of the most important logistical pillars within the broader development road system.”
He stressed that “the follow-up on the government program projects in the ports sector continued through reviewing the completion rates, addressing obstacles, and emphasizing adherence to timetables and technical and engineering specifications, as well as maintaining the readiness of docks and port facilities.”
Al-Karbalai also mentioned that “the General Company for Iraqi Ports witnessed the reorganization of a number of its administrative and technical departments, which included assigning Captain Alaa Abdul Hassan Al-Akeeli to manage the company’s operations, Haitham Kazem Hadi as Assistant to the Director General for Technical Affairs, and Imad Hamdi Saleh to manage the Faw Port Authority,” noting that “a ministerial order was issued on August 6, 2026, which included exemptions and assignments in the company and the Faw Port Authority.”
He explained that “the ministerial follow-up also included the reality of the maritime transport sector in Basra Governorate, its projects, needs, and ways to develop its performance and enhance its role in supporting trade and the national economy.”
He also indicated that “the work during the past period also included service files related to the ports sector in Basra, including the continuation of the Al-Bid’ah water project, as well as the participation of the ministry’s formations in the preparations for serving the Arbaeen visitors.”
