Minister of Communications: Al-Zidi cancels the railway and Baghdad airport development projects

Communications Minister Mustafa Sand revealed on Sunday that Prime Minister Ali al-Zidi and Transport Minister Wahab al-Hassani had taken a number of decisions that he described as “courageous and bold” during the past two weeks, noting that these steps had not received sufficient media attention.
Sand explained in a post on the social networking site Facebook that the decisions included canceling the railway project due to its “high cost and burden on the state budget”, in addition to canceling the project to develop Baghdad International Airport, which was referred to the company (CAAP) in coordination with the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
The minister added that the package also included removing the director general of ports from his post and referring him to retirement, noting that there are efforts led by the Minister of Transport to reintegrate the management of airports with air navigation, and that the proposal will be officially discussed during the next government sessions.
It is worth noting that the Cabinet held a session on Saturday evening, chaired by Ali Al-Zidi, during which it approved a package of decisions concerning the electricity and fuel files, as well as suspending wheat imports until the end of the marketing season for the local crop in the country.
