Minister of Communications: Agreements with the International Telecommunication Union to raise Iraq’s international ranking

Communications Minister Mustafa Sand confirmed on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with the regional office of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on a number of measures that would contribute to raising Iraq’s ranking in international telecommunications indicators. Sand stated in a statement to the official news agency that “the delegation he heads visited Cairo at the invitation of the ITU regional office and met with the regional office director, Adel Darwish, and his team,” noting that “a number of matters were agreed upon that will contribute to raising Iraq’s ranking in telecommunications indicators.”
He added that “the two sides agreed to draw up a clear policy consistent with the international vision for the communications sector,” noting that “the Ministry of Communications is constitutionally responsible for setting the sector’s policy in Iraq.”
He also noted that “starting from the first of next month, an academic program will begin in coordination with the Academy of the International Telecommunication Union, in addition to an agreement to provide technical and technological support in a number of areas, including the (IMS) system for landline telephones, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, innovation and other areas.”
Sand also explained that “the delegation will hold meetings during the visit with the Egyptian Minister of Communications and the regulatory body for the communications sector in Egypt, while tomorrow’s agenda includes a meeting with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States,” stressing that “the communications sector is a sector of cooperation far removed from political disputes, and that connectivity in the field of communications is essential, as the internet is linked through cables between countries, and technology is intertwined between different countries, and the world has become a small village.”
He pointed out that “Iraq benefits from Egypt because of its Arab, regional and international influence,” noting that “Egypt is chairing the current session of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) conference held in Geneva.”
He affirmed that “relations between Iraq and Egypt are good and strong,” indicating that “the existence of two flights on some days between the two countries, in addition to passenger bookings, reflects the depth of relations between the two brotherly countries.”
The Regional Director of the International Telecommunication Union’s office in the Arab States, Adel Darwish, also confirmed that the visit of the Minister of Communications, Mustafa Sand, to the regional office represents the beginning of a long partnership with Iraq in the communications and information technology sector. Darwish told the official agency, “The regional office of the International Telecommunication Union was pleased with the visit of the Minister of Communications of the Republic of Iraq, Mustafa Sand, and this visit represents the beginning of a long partnership with Iraq in the communications sector, which is one of the very important sectors.”
He added that “the International Telecommunication Union, as a specialized agency of the United Nations, believes that the telecommunications sector plays a very important role in the national digital economy,” explaining that “the Union is concerned with a number of issues, including setting international and global standards and benchmarks, while the application of these standards on the ground is important, in addition to building capacities at the sector level in general.”
He pointed out that “the infrastructure for communications and information technology has become an essential part of the digital transformation process, and an important element in the economic transformation of the country in general,” stressing that “the role of the communications sector and the Ministry of Communications is very important in setting the future policy for the digital economy in the Republic of Iraq.”
