The Commander of the US Central Command in the Middle East, General Frank MacKenzie, said that the barrage of missiles that was fired at the US embassy in Baghdad on Sunday was the largest attack on the capital’s Green Zone since 2010, with 21 missiles.
In statements to the Wall Street Guronal newspaper, McKinsey added that it was not clear whether the attack was orchestrated by a rogue militia or at the direction of Tehran specifically. The Iranians are believed to have supplied the weapons, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The general continued: “I do not know to what degree Iran is complicit. We do not seek war, and I do not think that they seek war as well.”
For its part, the US Central Command said, in a statement, that the missile attack that targeted the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Sunday, “was definitely carried out by a rogue militia supported by Iran,” and confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries among Americans in the attack that caused damage. Of the buildings, noting that “it was clear that he did not aim to avoid any casualties.”
It indicated that the missile attack was countered by the US C-RAM defense system that the United States deployed to protect the embassy.
Earlier Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that he would “hold Iran responsible” in the event of an attack targeting Americans in Iraq, as the first anniversary of the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani approaches in a US drone strike near Baghdad airport.
Trump attached a photo of the missiles to a tweet, in which he said that the embassy in Baghdad was attacked last Sunday by several missiles coming from Iran.
He continued, “We are hearing reports of additional attacks against Americans in Iraq,” and Trump warned, “friendly advice to Iran: If an American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think carefully.”
A US official revealed to Reuters, on Wednesday, that “senior national security officials met at the White House and agreed on a set of proposed options to deter any attack on American military personnel or diplomats in Iraq.”
