Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani affirmed on Thursday that today represents “the first step towards forming the new federal government,” expressing his wishes for success to Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi in forming the next federal government.
Masrour Barzani said in a speech during the inauguration of a vital bridge in the autonomous Soran region north of Erbil Governorate that the Kurdistan Region supports the formation of a federal government in which the constitutional rights of the region are “protected and guaranteed,” stressing that the participation of the Kurds in the political process will be “active” with the goal of protecting the rights and entitlements of the people of Kurdistan and all of Iraq.
He added that the regional government seeks to build relations “at higher levels,” hoping that the next phase will contribute to improving the general situation and strengthening cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil.
In another part of his speech, Masrour Barzani expressed his hope that the Kurdish political forces would be able to expedite the formation of the regional government and activate the Kurdistan Parliament.
The Iraqi parliament is scheduled to vote on Thursday on the ministerial program and the government of al-Zidi, while sources close to him said that he has not yet decided on some portfolios and is still reviewing the names of candidates submitted by the political blocs.
