On Wednesday, Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, warned against attempts to ignite “fires” in the political scene and disrupt the Iraqi reality, stressing support for the coordination framework to continue the government and rejecting changing or overthrowing it, while emphasizing the need to address the issue of restricting weapons to the state without escalation or confrontation.
Al-Maliki said during his meeting with a number of analysts and political experts, according to a statement issued by his office and received by Shafaq News Agency, that Iraq is going through a sensitive stage that requires a high degree of wisdom and responsibility, noting that there are attempts to disrupt the political scene, at a time when the coordination framework continues to support the government in order to ensure the stability of the country and its higher interests.
He stressed the need to address the issue of restricting weapons to the state without escalation or confrontation, warning that turning this issue into a clash between the state and the factions would be extremely dangerous, and could threaten the stability of Iraq and open the door to differing political positions.
Al-Maliki stressed that any internal confrontation would be a “loss for all of Iraq,” not just for one particular party or group, considering that anyone who imagines that any potential conflict would be “Shia-Shia” is mistaken, because its repercussions will affect the state, society and all groups.
He added that the government and the coordinating framework will not allow the country to slide into internal fighting, calling for the development of a clear national and regional vision that prevents Iraq from being exposed to risks and prevents it from becoming an arena for settling conflicts or regional and international disputes of interests, in order to preserve its security, sovereignty and stability.
On the governmental front, Maliki called for expediting the completion of the cabinet and resolving the issue of vacant ministries, noting that Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi has the same desire to resolve this issue.
He stressed that the coordination framework stands with the government and supports its continuation, explaining that having observations on government performance does not mean accepting a change of government or its downfall, but rather calls for addressing aspects of the problem and correcting the course of performance.
Al-Maliki stressed that the priority at the present stage is to preserve Iraq and its stability, and to prevent any internal or regional conflict from affecting its security, stressing that dialogue, understanding and prioritizing the national interest represent the best way to address contentious issues and overcome the challenges facing the country.
The issue of armed factions is one of the most sensitive issues facing the Iraqi government, with the approach of September 30, which the main political forces have set as the deadline for restricting weapons to official institutions.
The September 30th date also coincides with the deadlines related to ending the military presence of the international coalition in Iraq, which some factions use as a basis for linking the future of their weapons to the withdrawal of foreign forces.
