On Sunday afternoon, Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, announced his support for the anti-corruption campaign launched by the Iraqi government in Baghdad and the provinces, which has resulted in the arrest of dozens of suspects since dawn, stressing the need to continue it “until the end.”
Al-Maliki said in a post on the “X” platform, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, addressing Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and the judges: “We congratulate you on the (Dawn) campaign to pursue the corrupt who have tampered with the money of the Iraqi people, and we affirm our support for you and your efforts in establishing justice and holding accountable all those who have abused their trust.”
He added: “Continue with this mission to the end, as it is a long-awaited step for the Iraqi people.”
In the same context, the spokesman for the State of Law Coalition, MP Othman Al-Shaibani, announced in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “The coalition fully supports the measures taken by the government, in cooperation with the regulatory and judicial authorities, within the framework of the national campaign to combat corruption and prosecute those involved in it,” considering these steps “necessary to protect public funds and consolidate the prestige of the state and the rule of law.”
Al-Shaibani added that “the spread of corruption and the looting and plundering of state and people’s money has led to the abortion of many vital projects, the depletion of the country’s resources, and the deprivation of citizens of their rights to services and development, which necessitates proceeding firmly in holding accountable all those proven to be involved, without exception or discrimination.”
He stressed that “this campaign must continue until its goals are fully achieved, foremost among them being the recovery of all looted funds to the state treasury, and holding corrupt individuals accountable according to the law, without any leniency, favoritism, or political pressure.”
He continued: “We extend our thanks and appreciation to the President of the Supreme Judicial Council and to the Prime Minister of Iraq for their support and diligent follow-up on the anti-corruption file.”
Joint security forces in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, began closing the entrances to the fortified Green Zone (which includes the parliament building, government headquarters and diplomatic missions) at dawn on Sunday, coinciding with a large-scale raid and search campaign targeting the homes of MPs, politicians and businessmen.
These unprecedented and stringent measures come in conjunction with frequent reports of an expanded list of prosecutions targeting senior officials, security personnel, and businessmen on charges of illicit enrichment and squandering of public funds.
