Former MP Baqir al-Saadi confirmed on Tuesday that the impasse over electing the president of the republic is nearing a final resolution and will not take more than a week, revealing that political understandings are emerging that will lead to setting a date for the anticipated election session.
Al-Saadi told Al-Maalouma, “Adherence to constitutional timelines has become an urgent necessity to proceed with national obligations, foremost among them resolving the issue of the presidency.” He indicated that “recent meetings in Baghdad have yielded preliminary understandings that may translate into setting a date for the session within the next week.”
He added, “If the (Kurdish-Kurdish) agreement falters, the option will shift to the national arena within the parliament to decide the president’s identity.” He explained that “resolving this matter will be immediately followed by the nomination of the largest bloc’s candidate within the coordination framework, Nouri al-Maliki, to form the government.”
Al-Saadi stressed that “the current stage cannot tolerate further procrastination, given the complex issues facing the country, which require a fully empowered government capable of making crucial decisions and addressing the accumulated problems.”
