On Thursday, the Ministry of Electricity in the Kurdistan Regional Government revealed new details regarding the bills for the “Ronaki” sustainable electricity project, announcing that 24-hour supply has reached more than 90% of citizens. It also stated that about 80% of subscribers, especially those with limited income, are now paying less compared to the previous cost of combining national electricity with private generator subscriptions.
The ministry said in a statement seen by Shafaq News Agency that “the data on June bills showed that the billing cycle for the majority of subscribers extended to about 43 days,” noting that “the problem of (zero bills) for a portion of subscribers has been addressed, and the remaining cases will be addressed during the upcoming billing cycles.”
The ministry added that “according to the announced figures, the average bill value in the Kurdistan Region reached about 34,000 dinars, while Erbil recorded an average of 36,000 dinars, Sulaymaniyah 30,000, Duhok 38,000, and Halabja 27,000 dinars.”
She noted that “the average electricity consumption during the billing cycle was 462 kilowatt-hours across the region, distributed as follows: 480 kilowatt-hours in Erbil, 418 in Sulaymaniyah, 516 in Duhok, and 368 kilowatt-hours in Halabja.”
According to the ministry, more than 90% of the population of the Kurdistan Region are now covered by 24-hour electricity supply, noting that “the tariff adopted within the project has reduced spending on electricity for about 80% of citizens, especially those with limited income, compared to what they previously paid for national electricity and private generators combined.”
As part of settling previous dues, the regional government had announced, at the beginning of this month, an exceptional one-time discount of up to 50% of the debts owed by subscribers before the launch of the “Ronaki” project, with the aim of encouraging them to pay them in one payment, while the Ministry of Electricity confirmed that the deadline is exceptional and will not be extended.
The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, announced the “Ronaki” project in November 2024, as part of a plan aimed at gradually eliminating the need for private generators and securing electricity in a sustainable manner.
According to its announced plan, the regional government seeks to provide all homes, shops and commercial sites in Kurdistan with 24-hour electricity supply by the end of 2026.
