The Kurdistan Region Investment Authority announced on Wednesday that it has begun exporting surplus quantities of wheat from the region’s farmers outside of Iraq, noting that the largest portion of these quantities was exported to the northern neighbor, Turkey.

The spokesperson for the authority, Berkesht Akre Yi, told Shafaq News Agency that “after completing the registration of the specialized companies and receiving the remaining wheat from the farmers, the actual process of exporting the surplus to foreign markets has begun.”

Akre Yi explained that “the largest portion of the received wheat was sent to Turkey, while another part was allocated for local consumption to be used in industries and food products,” noting that “the regional government had previously issued a decision to exempt companies committed to exporting the crop from taxes and customs duties in support of the process.”
