The Information Agency / Baghdad –
Mahmoud Khoshnaw, a senior member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), asserted on Wednesday that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is attempting to challenge the PUK for other positions after its shock at losing its majority in the Kurdistan Region.
Speaking to the Information Agency, Khoshnaw stated, “The recent political shifts have left the KDP in a state of clear disarray, both in Baghdad and within the region.” He explained that “the political climate in the capital is leaning towards granting the presidency to the PUK, which is not in the KDP’s interest.”
He added that “the PUK is currently negotiating to form the regional government without relying on a majority system, aiming to de-escalate the political situation.” He emphasized, “We support a policy that seeks to reduce tensions, both in the region and in Baghdad.”
Khoshnaw pointed out that “the coordination framework and the Sunni forces will not allow the two Kurdish parties to treat political entitlements as spoils of war.”
He emphasized that “the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s sole candidate for the presidency is Nizar Amidi, and there is no compromise candidate for this position,” noting that “there is a security equation specific to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in the heart of Baghdad.”
Khoshnaw concluded by asking, “Is the Kurdistan Democratic Party permitted to have a security presence at the gates of the Green Zone?”—a clear reference to the sensitivity of the security issue and its connection to the current political balance.
