MP Zuhair Al-Fatlawi, from the Ishraqa Kanoun bloc, confirmed today, Monday, that his bloc’s position on the session to grant confidence to the government of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zidi remains firm and has not changed, noting that the bloc chose not to participate in the session to grant confidence and vote on ministerial portfolios because of the adoption of the quota principle in forming the cabinet.
Al-Fatlawi told Al-Maalouma that “the quota system that accompanied the formation of the government was one of the main reasons for our non-participation in the confidence vote session,” explaining that “the continuation of the quota and self-serving approach and the participation of the overwhelming majority of political forces in the government deprived the parliament of a real oversight front.”
He added that “the existence of a parliamentary body that monitors the work of the government is a necessity to ensure the proper functioning of institutions, and that the absence of this oversight front has been a reason for the failure of successive governments to achieve their goals.”
Al-Fatlawi explained that “his bloc rejects any move to create new positions, including the positions of Vice Presidents of the Republic or Deputy Prime Ministers,” considering that “these positions constitute an additional burden on the state treasury, at a time when citizens are looking forward to reducing the privileges and benefits associated with them.”
He pointed to a “constitutional violation related to Article (127) concerning conflict of interest,” noting that “Ishraqa Kanoun has prepared a draft law on conflict of interest to address this issue and will work to present it within the House of Representatives during the next stage.”
Al-Fatlawi affirmed that “the Ishraqa Kanun bloc will continue to open and follow up on corruption files,” explaining that “its role within Parliament will be purely supervisory from the position of the parliamentary opposition, given that it did not participate in the current government.”
The Ishraqa Kanun parliamentary bloc boycotted the vote of confidence for Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi’s government, announcing its adoption of a constructive parliamentary opposition approach within the House of Representatives.
