Former MP Jassim Mohammed Jaafar confirmed on Monday that Iraq still needs to strengthen its defense and military capabilities to ensure the complete protection of its air and border sovereignty, noting that security and regional challenges require the possession of advanced systems and effective deterrence capabilities.
Jaafar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “protecting Iraqi airspace and borders requires completing the construction of an integrated defense system capable of confronting various potential challenges and threats,” indicating that “Iraq has made remarkable progress in developing the capabilities of its security forces over the past years.”
He added that “the country needs more technical and military support and the development of monitoring and air defense systems in line with the scale of the current challenges,” noting that “strengthening national sovereignty also requires a unified political stance that supports security and military institutions.”
He pointed out that “maintaining border security and preventing any breaches requires high-level coordination between the various security agencies, in addition to providing the necessary capabilities to enable them to perform their tasks efficiently.”
He stressed that “protecting Iraqi sovereignty is a national priority that requires working to develop defense capabilities and benefiting from modern experiences and expertise in this field.”
Observers believe that restoring Iraq’s full airspace sovereignty is no longer a political luxury but a critical security necessity to protect its internal security and prevent its territory from being used to target neighboring countries.
