The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Saturday the opening of the submerged tunnel with a completion rate exceeding 95%, confirming that the project has reached its final stages and is ready for vehicles to pass through after the completion of the remaining final works.

Ports Director Farhan Al-Fartousi told Shafaq News Agency, “The project faced major and complex challenges, both internal and external, and was fought against and attempts were made to obstruct it at more than one stage. However, technical efforts and determination contributed to overcoming those obstacles and reaching this advanced level of achievement.”

He added that “the company is continuing to implement its strategic projects, most notably the Grand Faw Port project and the Development Road, which represents Iraq’s economic gateway and a strategic corridor that extends for a distance of approximately 1,200 kilometers, linking the south to the north and an integrated transport network that includes roads, railways and energy.”

He confirmed that “the development road project complementing the submerged tunnel has completed its studies and final designs and submitted them to the government,” indicating that “it represents a fundamental pillar for the economic transformation in Iraq during the next stage.”

The “submerged tunnel” is one of the vital projects in the Grand Faw Port, which is located in the south of Basra Governorate, and connects Faw with the Umm Qasr area in southern Iraq, also by sea.
