Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, expressed on Thursday his regret that the manual process of recycling car batteries “leads to cancer as a result of the leakage of acids and lead from them.”
This came in a press conference held by the minister today during his visit to the “Maya” battery factory in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, according to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency.
Battal said, during his speech: “We have more than seven million cars in Iraq, and therefore we need to produce large numbers of batteries annually, and at the same time this industry is important for preserving the environment and recycling batteries safely and correctly in accordance with environmental standards and requirements.”
He pointed out that “what is currently common in many areas of Iraq is that used batteries are recycled in manual and incorrect ways, and this affects workers in this field, in addition to causing major environmental problems through the acids in those batteries, and also lead, which unfortunately are carcinogenic materials.” Whether it evaporates into the air or seeps into the soil.”
He continued by saying: “We are working with the Ministry of Environment to limit these practices and stop them by following sound environmental recycling procedures,” adding: “We do not have statistics on random recycling, because these industries are not officially registered with the Ministry of Industry and Minerals.”
