The Iraqi Ministry of Defense vowed on Monday to deliver a “firm response” after one of its fighter jets was damaged in a missile attack targeting a military base in the capital, Baghdad.
The ministry stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the (Martyr Muhammad Alaa) air base was subjected at (01:55) after midnight to shelling by 122 mm “Krad” type missiles, launched from the outskirts of Baghdad.
She added that the attack resulted in the destruction of an Antonov An-132 aircraft belonging to the Iraqi Air Force, without any human casualties, noting that the competent authorities have begun taking the necessary measures to assess the damage and track the sources of the missile launches.
The ministry condemned what it described as a “cowardly criminal act” targeting the military establishment and its defense capabilities, stressing that the weapons and equipment possessed by the armed forces belong to the Iraqi people, and that tampering with them represents an attempt to destabilize the country’s security.
She stressed that she “will not hesitate to pursue anyone who dares to compromise Iraq’s security and sovereignty,” while affirming that these actions will not affect the readiness of the security forces.
The ministry concluded its statement by affirming that the response would be “firm” and within legal frameworks, in order to preserve the security and stability of the country.
A security source told Shafaq News Agency earlier today that one of the Iraqi Air Force’s Antonov aircraft belonging to Squadron 23 at Muhammad Alaa Air Base was damaged as a result of the bombing that targeted the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport at dawn today.
