The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday that Iraqi markets are witnessing a remarkable abundance of local fish during the current season, especially the varieties of (catfish, carp, and carp), reflecting the success of its programs aimed at developing fish stocks, enhancing food security, and providing diverse options for the Iraqi consumer.
The ministry explained in an official statement that this abundance came as a result of its continuous efforts to preserve the sustainability of fish stocks, through the programs implemented by the Department of Animal Resources to propagate local species through government hatcheries and release them into rivers and water bodies, which contributes to supporting the national fish stock and preserving and sustaining Iraqi species.
She added that the hatcheries of the Department of Animal Resources recorded the production of more than 1,549,700 Iraqi fish during the past three seasons (2023–2025), within the Ministry’s plans aimed at increasing local production, supporting fish stocks, and enhancing food security in the country.
