The Ministry of Agriculture denied on Sunday the existence of any “real” crisis in the production of food eggs, considering that the quantities produced locally are sufficient to cover the market’s needs, given the stability of poultry projects and their continued production at a regular capacity.
The ministry explained in a statement that the rise in prices is not based on a decrease in productivity, but rather is due to speculative practices by some traders, through promoting the existence of a shortage in its production, with the aim of achieving quick profits.
The statement also affirmed that the ministry’s monitoring teams will continue to follow up on price movements and supplies in coordination with specialized bodies, to control the market and prevent any cases of monopoly or exploitation, calling on citizens not to be swayed by rumors or to engage in excessive purchasing, assuring that the local market is fully secured and does not face any shortage of this vital commodity.
This clarification comes as the price of a tray of eggs in Iraqi local markets has risen to about 8,000 dinars, equivalent to (US$6). Meanwhile, the “Eco Iraq” observatory confirmed yesterday, Saturday, that the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz has led to a rise in poultry feed prices, which has been reflected in an increase in table egg prices in Iraq. It suggested that the government may move towards opening the door to imports until prices return to their normal levels.
