The General Company for Maritime Transport, based in Basra, announced on Tuesday that it had received, as a first step, 15 modern marine vessels and three ferries as part of the first batch of a contractual agreement with the People’s Republic of China, within the framework of modernizing the Iraqi maritime fleet.
The company’s director, Captain Ahmed Jassim, said that the new fleet includes 15 tourist boats, in addition to two passenger ferries with a capacity of 200 passengers each, as well as a multi-purpose ferry that can accommodate 500 passengers and 80 cars on a single trip.
He added that the new ferries will be dedicated to operating passenger transport lines between Iraq and the Gulf countries, which will contribute to enhancing travel, trade and tourism, and open new horizons for regional cooperation in the field of maritime transport, as well as providing safe and modern means of transport for travelers.
He stressed that the project comes within the directions of the Minister of Transport, Wahab Al-Hassani, to modernize the Iraqi maritime fleet and raise the efficiency of river and sea transport services in line with global standards and respond to the increasing demand for passenger transport services.
