Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Thursday that Iraq, by virtue of its geographical location, has become part of the geography of war, while he proposed the formation of a European group to study mechanisms for providing financial support.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, “Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein received a phone call Thursday, from the European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Ms. Dubravka Schweica,” explaining that “during the call, the European official expressed the European Union’s solidarity with Iraq and its people in the face of the challenges and attacks it is witnessing, stressing her keenness to discuss ways to provide the necessary support, and inquiring about Iraq’s needs at this stage.”
The two sides discussed the repercussions of the war and its economic effects, particularly on European markets, in light of rising oil prices, as well as the difficulties Iraq faces in exporting oil as a result of the current situation.
For his part, the Foreign Minister affirmed that “Iraq, by virtue of its geographical location, has unfortunately become part of the geography of war, even though the policy of the Iraqi government is based on rejecting wars as a means of resolving conflicts, and believing in dialogue and negotiations.” He pointed out that Iraq suffered human losses as a result of the attacks, including casualties among the Peshmerga forces, in addition to casualties among the Popular Mobilization Forces and elements of the Iraqi army.
He explained that “the continuation of the war has negatively impacted the Iraqi economy, especially given the inability to export oil,” stressing Iraq’s need for European support at this stage.
In this context, the Foreign Minister proposed the formation of a European group, based on the partnership agreement between Iraq and the European Union, to study mechanisms for providing financial support, especially in the event that the crisis continues for a long period, with guidance to European financial institutions in this regard.
