Data from the U.S. Treasury Department on foreign holdings of Treasury securities, released on Thursday, showed that total foreign holdings rose to $9.348 trillion by the end of March 2026, compared to $9.001 trillion in April 2025, with Japan, the United Kingdom and China continuing to top the list of major investors.

According to data from the US International Capital System (TIC ), reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, Japan maintained its position as the largest holder of Treasury bonds with holdings of $1.191 trillion in March 2026, followed by the United Kingdom with $926.9 billion, and then China with holdings of $652.3 billion.

The Cayman Islands, Belgium and Canada came next, with holdings ranging between $439 billion and $459 billion, while countries such as India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia recorded lower holdings, but remained above the $100 billion mark.

Iraq did not appear on the list of major holders of US Treasury bonds, as the list is limited to countries that have holdings of no less than $100 billion, while estimates indicate that Iraq’s holdings of these bonds are less than this level.

The data shows that official foreign holdings of US Treasury bonds and securities amounted to $3.902 trillion at the end of last March, reflecting the continued reliance of governments and central banks worldwide on US debt instruments as an investment haven and financial reserve.
