The Ministry of Electricity announced on Saturday that the completion rate of the Gulf interconnection project with Iraq has reached 94%, stressing that it is hoped that the first phase of this project will provide 500 megawatts of additional energy, which can be increased in the future according to the requirements of the national system within the country.

The ministry explained in a statement that the staff of the Southern Electricity Transmission Company are continuing to implement the Gulf electrical interconnection project with a voltage of (400 kV), linking the Al-Wafra power station in the State of Kuwait and the Al-Faw transformer station in southern Iraq, as part of the strategic projects supporting the stability of the system during the summer season, with a total length of about 285 kilometers.

According to the statement, the company’s general manager, Ali Zuhair Karim, is following up on the ongoing work on the line extending from the border area in Safwan to the Faw station, with a length of 76.7 kilometers. He indicated that the completed work included the completion of pouring the concrete bases for the towers in full, and the installation of 112 towers out of 221 towers within the Iraqi sector, as well as the completion of wiring 73 kilometers of power cable, and 63 kilometers of optical ground wire (OPGW) dedicated to the communications network, in conjunction with the continued flow of specialized materials to the work sites.
