Iraq is preparing to charter additional oil tankers to transport its crude through the Strait of Hormuz, with at least two tankers expected to arrive in the coming days, as part of the country’s efforts to increase control over the transport of its oil exports through the strait.
Bloomberg reported that the Iraqi state-owned oil tanker company expects to charter at least one supertanker, along with a smaller Suezmax tanker, in the coming days, citing sources who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information.
According to the sources, the company is separately planning to reissue a tender to lease more tankers, after it cancelled a previous attempt to lease two or more tankers due to not receiving acceptable offers.
This move comes at a time when the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz is facing increasing risks, prompting Iraq to strengthen its ability to manage the transport of its oil exports through this vital waterway.
