The Iraqi Ministry of Transport discussed with the Kyrgyz side, via closed-circuit television technology, ways to enhance joint cooperation and develop land transport between the two countries, with the participation of a number of concerned departments and related bodies.

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry, the active role of the General Company for Land Transport was highlighted during the meeting, as Abbas Khazal Hassan, Assistant Director of the Planning and Follow-up Department, attended the meeting as a representative of the company, based on the directives of the senior management. He stressed the importance of formulating and concluding a comprehensive international agreement that covers both the transport of goods and passengers together, and not being limited to partial frameworks, in order to ensure the highest levels of comprehensiveness and effectiveness in transit and land transport.

The statement explained that the talks focused on facilitating the passage of Kyrgyz trucks through Iraqi territory towards the Arab Gulf states, and simplifying technical and customs procedures at border crossings to shorten time and reduce costs, thereby enhancing Iraq’s position as a vital trade corridor and regional link between Central Asia and the region.

For its part, the Kyrgyz side welcomed the proposal put forward by the representative of the General Company for Land Transport, and it was agreed to provide the Iraqi side with a draft comprehensive agreement for the transport of goods and passengers for study and discussion in the upcoming meetings in preparation for its official conclusion, according to the statement.
