Iraq’s National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Authority announced on Saturday that no radioactive contamination had been recorded within the country, despite a series of attacks targeting nuclear facilities in neighboring Iran.
The head of the agency, nuclear engineer Fadel Hawi Mazban, explained in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the agency was informed through the International Atomic Energy Agency that several Iranian facilities were subjected to attacks, including (the yellow mass manufacturing facility in Yazd province, the Bushehr nuclear power plant, and the iron and steel plant in Khuzestan).
Mizbane confirmed that “no spread of radioactive materials or radioactive contamination has been recorded, and our early warning systems have not indicated any increase in radiation levels” as a result of those attacks.
In a related context, Mazban, in his capacity as head of the Central Emergency Operations Room, stressed the “complete readiness” of the national monitoring systems in cooperation with the global early warning network, which covers strategic areas extending from Jordan (alongside the Dimona reactor) to the Arabian Gulf (near the Bushehr plant), to ensure the immediate detection of any radioactive change.
The statement concluded by noting that all necessary measures have been taken by the competent security authorities, in accordance with the requirements of the National Nuclear Emergency Plan and developments in the field situation in the region.
