Iraq condemned on Friday the targeting of Kuwait with missiles and drones, in a stance that came after Kuwait announced that its territory had been subjected to Iranian attacks, which it considered a “dangerous escalation” and a violation of its sovereignty and security.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Baghdad condemns the targeting of Kuwait and affirms its rejection of all actions that threaten the security and stability of the countries of the region.
The ministry stressed the importance of restraint and avoiding escalation, which would contribute to reducing tension and enhancing regional security and stability, calling for the adoption of dialogue and diplomatic means to address crises.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry affirmed Baghdad’s support for all regional and international efforts aimed at preventing the spread of violence and working towards peaceful solutions that preserve the security and stability of the region’s peoples.
The Iraqi statement did not mention Iran by name, but the position came after the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry announced its condemnation of what it described as “Iranian attacks” that targeted Kuwaiti territory with missiles and drones, considering them a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and a direct threat to civilians and vital facilities.
The Kuwaiti army announced earlier on Thursday that its air defenses had intercepted missile attacks and “hostile” drones, calling on residents to adhere to security and safety instructions issued by the competent authorities.
The Iranian attack on a US base in Kuwait came as part of a new round of escalation in the Gulf, following US strikes targeting sites in southern Iran, which Washington said were in defense of its forces and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Central Command, US forces intercepted five Iranian drones near the Strait and prevented the launch of a sixth drone from a site in Bandar Abbas, before Iran launched a ballistic missile towards Kuwait, which Washington considered a violation of the ceasefire.
Iranian media had previously reported raids targeting Iranian boats south of Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in fatalities.
