On Monday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein called for opening channels of dialogue and communication between the parties to the conflict in the region, and working to create the appropriate conditions for reaching understandings that contribute to reducing tension and preventing the conflict from escalating.
This came according to a statement from the ministry, received by Shafaq News Agency, during Hussein’s meeting with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy, at the League’s General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo, on the sidelines of the (166) regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level.
The statement explained that “the meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination within the framework of the League of Arab States, in addition to discussing current developments in the region and the existing tension between Tehran and Washington, and the repercussions of the escalation on the security and stability of the region.”
He added that “the meeting addressed the potential repercussions of the disruption to shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and its effects on the economies of Arab countries, particularly Iraq, in light of the strategic importance of the strait to global trade and energy supplies.”
According to the statement, Hussein pointed to “the urgent need for communication channels and a link that helps to bring viewpoints closer and support diplomatic paths.”
He pointed to “the possibility of the League of Arab States playing a positive role in this context, by utilizing its relations and contacts and supporting efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and achieving stability in the region.”
For his part, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed “the importance of adopting quiet diplomacy and dialogue in addressing crises,” expressing his openness and readiness to “play a positive role that contributes to supporting efforts to reduce tension and enhance regional security and stability.”
The statement noted that the meeting was attended on the Iraqi side by the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, Qahtan Taha Khalaf, and the Head of the Arab Department, Ambassador Osama Mahdi Ghanem.
