Iraq and Syria agreed on Monday to form two joint committees to enhance bilateral cooperation and follow up on the implementation of its outcomes, while the two sides discussed the rehabilitation of oil pipelines, and cooperation in the fields of energy, water, agriculture, transportation and border crossings.
This came in a joint statement issued after a meeting in Damascus between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, in the presence of Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir.
The two sides agreed to form a joint committee specializing in the fields of energy, agriculture, water, transportation and border crossings, in order to contribute to developing joint cooperation and enhancing mutual interests.
They also agreed to form a high-level joint coordination committee, chaired by the two foreign ministers, to ensure the follow-up on the implementation of the outcomes of bilateral cooperation and to coordinate efforts in various fields.
The meeting discussed mechanisms for transporting and transiting energy supplies, the project to rehabilitate oil pipelines from Iraq to Syria, as well as cooperation in the fields of water and agriculture in a way that contributes to strengthening common food security, economic integration and serving common interests.
The two sides also discussed strengthening security coordination and joint cooperation, in order to support the security of both countries and the stability of the region, and to enhance efforts aimed at confronting common challenges.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in Syria on Monday for an official visit, at the invitation of Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the Minister is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior Syrian officials during the visit to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic, and to develop joint cooperation in various political, security, economic and trade fields, in a way that serves the common interests of the two brotherly countries.
