Iranian state media announced on Wednesday the Iraqi figures who will participate in the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to a report by the Iranian Fars News Agency, translated by Shafaq News Agency, the Iraqi delegation that will participate in Khamenei’s funeral will include President Nizar Amidi, Speaker of Parliament Hebat al-Halbousi, and President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani, in addition to a large Kurdish delegation that includes leaders of the two parties in the region, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
Sources revealed to Shafaq News Agency in the middle of last month that the body of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is scheduled to be transferred to Najaf Airport on July 8, for the purpose of his funeral in the province .
She said that the body will be transported from the Iranian city of Qom, and will be received by a number of officials and religious and social figures. The official reception ceremony will be held at Najaf International Airport, before the body is transferred to the Alawi Shrine to hold the visitation and farewell ceremonies .
He added that “following that, the funeral procession will head to Karbala Governorate, where the body will be taken to Abbas Street, reaching the area between the two holy shrines, to hold a mass funeral ceremony with wide participation from citizens, and then return to Najaf Airport and be transported to the city of Mashhad .”
This, along with the funeral procession in Iran, whose axes will extend between Damavand Street, Enghelab (Revolution) Street, Azadi (Freedom) Street, and the scene extending towards Lashkari Expressway, is among the options being considered and studied for holding these ceremonies .”
Khamenei was assassinated in the first US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran on February 28, after leading Iran for more than three decades. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeded him as Supreme Leader, although he was also injured in those strikes and has not made any public appearances since assuming the position.
