Iran officially responds to Trumps call for negotiationsThe Iranian government spokeswoman responded, on Wednesday (February 5, 2025), to US President Donald Trump’s call for his readiness to enter into negotiations with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.

“We adhere to three fixed principles in the field of foreign policy, the first is dignity, which means the dignity of the country and the dignity of the people, and the second is wisdom, which requires a deep vision of matters and dealing with them consciously,” spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said in a press conference.

Mohajerani added that the third principle is “interest, which requires making decisions based on Iran’s national interest,” noting that “of course, all state issues are pursued according to these three principles, especially with regard to relations with other countries.”

On February 4, 2025, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new economic sanctions on Iran, targeting Iran’s energy sector and financial institutions.

The move comes as part of escalating pressure on Tehran over its nuclear programme and regional activities.

In a statement, Trump said: “Iran must stop its destabilizing behavior and return to the negotiating table to reach a comprehensive deal that ensures it will not develop nuclear weapons.”

Trump stressed that “this step comes within the framework of the ‘maximum pressure’ strategy to force Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a new agreement.”

Trump said, “The United States will consider whether or not to make a deal with Iran,” expressing his readiness to negotiate with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The US president also claimed that he “has the right to prevent Iran from selling oil to other countries,” adding that Iran is very close to making a nuclear weapon: “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
