Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported on Saturday that Iran had allowed Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, following a request from the Iraqi government.
The agency did not provide further details regarding the number of tankers, the nature of the shipment, or which Iraqi party made the request.
The Iraqi government is demanding that its Iranian counterpart allow tankers carrying Iraqi oil to pass through the Iranian maritime blockade.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hebat al-Halbousi, confirmed on Friday that he discussed with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, during the latter’s visit to Baghdad, the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Iraq, and the need for Iraqi oil exports to have “special status,” indicating that the Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council pledged to discuss the issue of Iraqi oil exports upon returning to Tehran.
According to Al-Halbousi, there was popular and governmental Iraqi discontent regarding the lack of special treatment for Iraqi oil exports in light of the Strait crisis, noting that the Iranian side showed understanding of this issue.
Shipping data recorded a decline in ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, following the suspension of talks between Iran and the United States. Data from the company “Kpler” showed that seven cargo ships sailed through the strait on Thursday.
