A source in Sulaimaniyah province revealed on Monday that understandings have been reached between Turkey and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) regarding the border areas in northern Iraq, in exchange for Ankara providing political, economic, and security support to the KRG.
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “a high-level Turkish government delegation recently visited Erbil in an unannounced visit and held a meeting with the KRG Prime Minister, during which they discussed protecting Turkish military positions in the border areas and preventing attacks on them by Peshmerga forces or any other parties.”
The source added that “Turkey pledged to support the region’s economic situation, given the growing public demands for new elections and a change in the current administration,” noting that “the understandings included arrangements concerning strategic border areas in a way that serves Turkish interests.”
The source indicated that “there are growing Kurdish popular demands for the withdrawal of Turkish forces from northern Iraq, considering their presence unjustified and a threat to Iraqi sovereignty,” explaining that “the border issue has become a key focus in the understandings between Ankara and Erbil.”
