A source close to the International Monetary Fund revealed on Thursday that Iraq is seeking financial support from the Fund as a result of the repercussions of the war in the Middle East, which has affected the flow of oil and energy supplies from producing countries.
Reuters quoted the source as saying that “talks are underway with Iraq about the size of the financing and the structure of a possible loan,” at a time when the rentier economy country is seeking to secure its operating expenses and stabilize its general budget in the face of fluctuations in global energy markets.
Iraq is among the countries in the region most affected by the disruptions to energy supply chains through the Strait of Hormuz, since the joint US-Israeli strikes that targeted Iran at the end of February, and until now, despite the ceasefire that followed a 40-day military conflict.
