The Iraqi political and oversight landscape is reeling from a powerful aftershock triggered by the confessions of Adnan al-Jumaili, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Refining Affairs, whom popularly and politically refer to as the “oil whale.”
A surprise security operation, launched late last night and continuing until now, saw security forces from the Counter-Terrorism Service, the Iraqi Army, and the National Security Service close all entrances and exits to the heavily fortified Green Zone. This operation resulted in the downfall of several high-ranking officials whose hands are stained with public funds.
The campaign, which enjoyed legal and judicial backing and direct orders from Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zubaidi, has, according to observers, demonstrated that “political immunity” is no longer a shield against investigative committees that have begun to open the “black box” of corruption files. Parliamentary sources revealed to Al-Maalomah the behind-the-scenes details of the tense night, confirming that al-Jumaili’s legally recorded confessions led to the issuance of arrest warrants against current and former members of parliament, governors, and directors-general.
A source close to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi confirmed that the campaign to arrest what he called “bigwigs” would continue in the coming hours, indicating that the current phase of operations would last for 72 hours. He also noted that airports and border crossings had been provided with the names of 64 officials to prevent them from leaving the country.
The source told Al-Maalomah that “the arrest campaign will not stop, and the ongoing security operation will continue for 72 hours, extending until Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States on July 17.”
He added that “the operations will expand in the coming hours, and Baghdad and several other provinces will witness new security campaigns targeting those accused of corruption.”
He pointed out that “among the most prominent detainees are the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, and MP Alia Nassif, along with a number of other MPs, four directors general, and two advisors to former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.”
He explained that “the campaigns are based on court orders and are linked to corruption cases involving former Deputy Minister of Oil Adnan al-Jumaili and the Director General of the Electricity Distribution Company, Alaa Samir, as well as cases in the Ministries of Industry, Education, Interior, and Defense.”
He confirmed that “airports and border crossings have been provided with the names of 64 Iraqi officials against whom travel bans have been issued to prevent the accused from fleeing the country.”
A joint force comprising the Counter-Terrorism Service, the Iraqi Army, the Integrity Commission, and other security forces carried out a large-scale security operation early Sunday morning within the Green Zone and several areas in Baghdad and a number of other provinces.
