The Iraqi parliament elected MP Hebat al-Halbousi as speaker of the parliament for its sixth parliamentary session on Monday, during the first session of the new parliament, in a move considered an opening step in the process of forming the new government.
The election of Halbousi, 45, from the Progress Party, came with a majority of votes, as he obtained 208 votes after the withdrawal of the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, from the race for the presidency of the council, so the competition inside the hall turned into a confrontation between three candidates: Hebat Halbousi, Salem al-Issawi, and Amer Abdul-Jabbar.
The candidate for the position, Salem Al-Issawi , received 66 votes, and MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar received 9 votes , in addition to 26 invalid ballots.
The “National Political Council,” which includes prominent Sunni forces, announced on the eve of the session the nomination of Hebat al-Halbousi as a candidate representing a number of blocs within the council, at a time when the Sunni arena witnessed sharp differences before the decision.
According to constitutional procedures, the election of the Speaker of Parliament is supposed to be followed by the election of his two deputies, and then the election of the President of the Republic within 30 days of the first session. The President is then to task the largest bloc with forming the government, a process that may extend for months due to the complexities of political agreements.
